At St. John's C. of E. Primary School, Abram, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) is an important part of our Personal Development offer. Through our CUSP PSHE curriculum, from Early Years to Year 6, children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to make positive choices, build healthy relationships and prepare for life beyond school.

Our PSHE curriculum supports children to:

• understand themselves, their emotions and their developing identities;
• build positive, respectful relationships with others;
• understand how to keep themselves safe, both online and offline;
• develop confidence, resilience and independence;
• make informed and responsible choices about their health and wellbeing;
• understand the wider world and their responsibilities within their community; and
• develop the skills and values needed to become confident, respectful and responsible citizens.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

RSE is an integral part of our PSHE curriculum. Through age-appropriate and carefully sequenced learning, children develop an understanding of relationships, respect, boundaries, growing and changing, health and personal safety.

We place a strong emphasis on respectful relationships, helping children to understand themselves and others, recognise healthy and unhealthy behaviours, communicate effectively and know how to seek help when needed.

Relationships Education and Health Education are statutory elements of the primary curriculum. Where appropriate, children also learn about aspects of Sex Education within our wider, carefully planned PSHE programme.

PSHE Beyond the Classroom

PSHE is not limited to weekly lessons. It is embedded throughout school life through assemblies, pupil voice and leadership, enrichment, educational visits, charity and community activities, safeguarding education, online safety and wider Personal Development opportunities.

Our children are encouraged to put their learning into practice, develop a strong sense of belonging and contribute positively to their school, local community and wider world.
