Leadership and Roles
At St. John's C. of E. Primary School, Abram, as part of the QUEST Trust, we believe that every child has a voice and the potential to be a leader. We provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to take on leadership roles, contribute to school life and make a positive difference to the experiences of others.
Our pupil leadership opportunities help children to develop confidence, independence, responsibility and resilience, while giving them a genuine sense of belonging, ownership and pride in their school community.
Through pupil leadership, children are encouraged to:
We believe that leadership is not simply about holding a title or position. It is about having the confidence to make a difference, listening to others and taking positive action. Through our leadership opportunities, we want every child to recognise that their voice matters and that they have an important role to play in shaping their school and their future.
At St. John's C. of E. Primary School, Abram, as part of the QUEST Trust, we believe that every child has a voice and should feel that their ideas and opinions are valued.
Our Trust Wide Student Parliament gives pupils the opportunity to share their views, contribute to decisions and help make our school an even better place. Through this, children develop confidence, communication, teamwork, responsibility and a sense of belonging.
Who do they represent?
The Student Parliament represents the views of all pupils across the school and they work alongside our Trust school parliaments collaboratively.
How are they chosen?
One pupil from each class in Years 3–6 is democratically elected by their peers, providing an authentic opportunity to experience democracy in action.
What do they do?
School Council representatives:
Through Student Parliament, children learn that their voice matters and they can make a positive difference to their school and wider community.z
The Young Leadership Team (YLT) is an integral part of life at St. John's C. of E. Primary School, Abram. Pupils represent the voice of their peers, helping to promote inclusion, collaboration and a strong sense of belonging across our school.
The team meets regularly to discuss issues that matter to our pupils, including fundraising, improving school life and debating important topics. Representatives gather views and ideas from their classmates.
Our YLT also works alongside other pupil leaders, including Student Parliament and the Head Boy and Head Girl, to help shape positive changes across the school.
Through their work, our YLT helps pupils feel heard, valued and empowered, while developing confidence, communication, teamwork, responsibility and leadership skills. Most importantly, children learn that their voice matters and that they can make a positive difference to their school and wider community.

Recommend books and authors to their peers.
Support class libraries, book corners and reading spaces.
Celebrate reading achievements during school celebration assemblies.
Encourage children to read regularly and for pleasure by enthusing about our Ready, Steady, Read initiative!
Through their role, Bramhall's Reading Ambassadors develop confidence, communication, leadership and responsibility, while continuing Julie Bramhall’s legacy and reflecting the QUEST commitment to belonging, pupil voice and developing confident, curious and resilient children.
Our House Captains are positive role models who demonstrate our school and QUEST values through their behaviour, attitude, responsibility and commitment to school life. They lead by example, encouraging others to make positive choices and contribute to our school community.
At Abram St. John’s, every pupil belongs to one of our four houses: Junction, Maypole, Bickershaw and Bamfurlong, all named after local mining pits that played an important part in the history of our community. These house teams help to build a sense of belonging, teamwork and healthy competition across the school.
House Captains support and motivate their house members throughout the year, helping to promote teamwork, school spirit and participation in school events. They encourage pupils to demonstrate our values each day and to take pride in representing their house.
House Points
House points are awarded to pupils who make the right choices and consistently demonstrate our school values. Children may earn points for showing kindness, respect, resilience, responsibility, excellent effort, positive behaviour, good manners, outstanding work and a commitment to learning.
Every house point contributes to the overall total for each house, meaning that every pupil has an important role to play in helping their team succeed. Regular house point celebrations help to recognise and reward the positive contributions made by pupils across the school.
Through these roles, House Captains develop important leadership skills, including communication, teamwork, organisation, confidence, responsibility and active citizenship. They help to ensure that our school remains a welcoming, inclusive and positive place where everyone can thrive and flourish.
